Suffice it to say I’m devastated this evening to learn about the recent passing of Larry James, the former manager of Dartmouth’s Food Court. Larry, an unmistakable campus icon and one of the all-around nicest, friendliest, and most comforting members of my Dartmouth community, passed away from cancer at the age of 62 on Tuesday. Larry knew nearly every student on campus, and had at least one nickname or distinguishing trait for each of them. Rain or shine, button-down, t-shirt, or polo, Larry always told me that I’d look “real smart” if I wore a tie. He often showed off his flat-bottomed Spongebob Squarepants tie to me as a points of comparison. I’ll miss you, Larry. You were a great friend, and your kind words helped me through some rough evenings at Dartmouth.

Thank you for taking the time to write this on your blog.

I am his niece and I am just doing some research for his memorial service. It’s been one week since he passed away, and the response from the students he worked with has been most most heartening.

He would have been pleased as punch to know you had written this about him. I am going to share this with others in the family.

Best wishes to you.
