Yesterday I went to Broad Channel with my friend Becca to scout it out as a place to shoot a music video I’m planning for my friend Eric. It was a delightful day.
Broad Channel is a neighborhood in southeast Queens in the middle of Jamaica Bay, next to the wildlife refuge. It has the quaint air and the architectural style of a small New England fishing village.
Though not exactly in Broad Channel, here are some houses on stilts one can see from the train while traveling between Broad Channel and the Rockaways:
The metro stop at Broad Channel is a few blocks off the main drag, but here’s a firehouse that’s nearby. The plaque was dedicated to a long-service fire chief.
I liked the way these balloons were flapping in the wind outside what seemed to be a birthday party.
This is the school in Broad Channel, as seen through chain-link fencing. Like many things in the town, there’s a clear nautical theme to the school’s design. Nautical themes appeal to me for the purposes of this project.
This walkway led to a series of houses on stilts.
I like the way these elements reflected in the water. This’ll look really good filmed with my Canon 518-XLS.
Another shot of Broad Channel from the train.
This hand-made ice-cream truck featuring an image of Mickey giving Minnie an ice cream cone, ready to shank her with some weird surgical tool, is a national treasure. And the current background on my computer.
Many of the residential streets of Broad Channel were carved out of the ocean - they jut out like piers, with canals in between houses. Here’s a good example of that, one street shot from another.
If Days of Heaven and Enigma of Kaspar Hauser have taught me anything, it’s that when you find tall grasses swaying in the breeze, film it.
My camera doesn’t have a very good zoom. Suffice it to say this is an excellent view of the subway traveling between Broad Channel and the Rockaways, and I do intend to film this, should I choose to film at Broad Channel.
Oh, and Hi, Becca!
Next up on the list of possible locations: historic Floyd Bennett Field!
