Why do people buy these? I’m absolutely baffled by the idea of sinking money into $1 images you can place on someone’s Facebook wall. They have no monetary value.

They should, though: Facebook gifts should be tied to real goods and services.

If you buy someone a cupcake via facebook, that person should receive in their inbox a one-time coupon for a cupcake at a cupcakery in their area. Similarly, donuts. Or flowers. Or chocolates. Look at the Little Debbie Snack Cake at top right - the possibilities here are endless, though it would likely put an end to less-realistic ‘gifts’ like that cute little doggie icon. Imagine that instead of giving your friend some cheesy online image of a ‘BFF’ heart-shaped pair of pendants, you actually gave them a cheesy ‘BFF’ heart-shaped pair of pendants.

Obviously you’d have to jack up the price a little bit in order to accomodate for the actual capital of producing a cupcake (or pendant, or whatever) - Facebook would still make a profit, have companies beating down their door to offer their goods directly through the site, and would be slightly less annoying.
