My Five Year Plan

Heading to NYC! I’m in San Antonio right now. Tonight I’ve been doing laundry, packing boxes, and getting generally prepared for heading to New York, where I plan to carry out my five year plan (which is, for the new readers I seem to be getting every day, to make a feature length film within the next five years). I’ve got a sweet apartment with my friend Pam in a weird corner of the Upper East Side.

And no, for those asking, I don’t have a job yet. I do have a few ideas though - I’ll be applying to places for the first two weeks I’m in the city (and yes, I have been applying for over eight weeks now, to no avail). If I don’t have anything within two weeks, I’ll go to a temping agency, throw down my green card (er, the fact that I went to Dartmouth), and see what comes up that way. In the meantime, I’ll be unpacking, getting the apartment organized, and getting involved with a few preliminary things - meeting up with some old and new contacts (both in film and not) in the area, getting involved with a film journal I’ll be writing for, and generally settling into the daily routine of New York City, in and of itself a serious task.

It’s sad to leave San Antonio - this is a place where I’ll always feel at home, and I’ll miss my family and friends here. Though I know I’ll surely see my family a lot in the coming years, San Antonio will always feel a bit apart from this point forward. I feel regret that I’m not going to be here to watch my nephews and niece (that is, those in the San Antonio area) grow up, and I’m sad that I’ll be seeing less of my parents. Hopefully they’ll be able to hike up to the city occasionally, and hopefully I’ll be able to get down to Texas as well. It’s a sad bitter truth that at this moment, a break needs to happen. I need this separation, and so do they, and though four years of college in New Hampshire have prepared us for it, I fear this separation may prove rough for both me and my family in the coming months.
