So I’ve been in New York for one week. Here are exciting things that have happened:

1. Saw W.R. - Mysteries of the Organism in a brand new print as part of the Janus retro. I really love this film, as you could tell from its inclusion on my YMDb Top 20 list, and I’m glad to see it in an appreciative audience who laughed when it was funny, was quiet when it was moving, and applauded at the end.

2. Got more stuff in my apartment set up. Cable/internet are now set up. I put up a bunch of posters on my wall and the walls of the living room and kitchen - they’re fun! I still haven’t gotten a few items of furniture that’ll prove important (bookcase, TV stand). I think I’m leaving up seating in the living room to Pam, since she’s come up with a few nice-sounding options that I find confusing.

3. Saw some movies on DVD. Watched a few more Mira Nair films as research for the essay I finished on Wednesday about her. Should I post that here? She’s a really fantastic filmmaker, and her lesser-known films (especially the incredible telefeature Hysterical Blindness) are just as strong as any high-profile work she’s produced. Also rewatched Metropolitan, an old favorite, and saw The Death of Mr. Lazarescu and a few TCM films (including the awesome two-strip Technicolor Michael Curtiz film Doctor X, with Fay Wray, and unforuntately, the awful sequel, made a decade later with Humphrey Bogart).

4. It’s been a bit quiet around here lately - Pam is out of town visiting a friend, and some of my other friends are similarly out-of-town/predisposed. I went to a party last night in Williamsburg - it was a lot of fun, and not very Williamsburgy, which was a great relief.

5. I got an internship! Two, in fact. With Film Forum and Rialto Pictures. While neither pays, I’m excited to get involved with both and am still looking for a part-time job somewhere else in the city to cover my monthly expenses.

6. Haven’t worked too much on creative stuff. Argh. But I’ll be doing so a good amount this week.

Sure, Brendon, if you feel like it.
I for one would be curious to read it.

I really should see Nair’s lesser-known work. I like all three I’ve seen (Salaam Bombay, Monsoon Wedding and Mississippi Masala) but haven’t seen anything else. Thanks for the tip on Hysterical Blindness.

What did you think of Death of Mr L? I’m trying to decide if I should see it this weekend.

PS- I miss you here! DFS misses you!

Go see Death of Mr. L - I don’t love this movie nearly as much as most critics do. The easy literary allusion/metaphor that drags through the entire thing is a little trying, but when it’s firing on all cylinders, it’s good. It’s extraordinarily depressing, of course, and not at all funny, despite the promotional campaign. But yeah, give it a shot.

Aw shucks - I miss DFS. Maybe I’ll figure out a way to get up there at some point…
